Prerequisites
Merge fields
Know how to use merge fields. Many sections and subsections of a smart doc template contain text and merge fields. Before creating a template, you should become familiar with the available merge field options.

Creating a template structure
Before starting, you should know what content you want to present in the template. You can design a fresh template any way you like. Here's an example of how we structure our loan strategy report templates:

Opening a blank template.
The first step is to open a blank Smart Doc template.
Click the account icon on the bottom left of your screen
- Click Settings
In the Settings column, click Proposals
- Click Templates
Go to the top right corner of the page and click New Template. A blank template displays.
Using template tools.
Adding a header
BrokerEngine displays Header content on every proposal page.
Go to the top of the blank page and hover the mouse. The Header section displays. Click anywhere inside the Header area to open the editor.

There are three Layout options in the editor. Choose one. Type text into the text field or add merge fields. Use the toolbar to add formatting and style (e.g. bold, font size, lists, etc.).
If you choose a layout with an image, BrokerEngine auto-selects the current broker logo by default (if available). Optionally, click the image field and upload a different logo file. Click Save.

Editing numbered lists
To add a numbered line to a sequence, place the cursor at the end of a sentence and hit Enter. The editor moves the cursor to the next line and inserts the next number.
To insert a space without adding a numbered line, place the mouse at the end of a line, hold down the Shift key, and hit Enter.

Adding styling
The proposal builder has basic tools to add formatting (e.g. heading size) and styling (e.g. font colour).
Adding images
Click the Insert image icon on the toolbar to upload files from your device. You can also copy and paste images from Word and Google docs into the template.

To insert spacing above and below an image, hover the mouse on the image. Click the top arrow (add spacing above) or the bottom arrow (add spacing below).

Inserting a table.
Click the Table icon in the toolbar. Drag the mouse on the grid to select the number of rows and columns.
Click to learn how to insert and format a table.
Inserting page breaks.
Add breaks to mark the end of a page.
Locate the place to insert a page break and click the mouse.
Go to the toolbar and click the Page break icon.
The tool inserts a PAGE BREAK line below the mouse location.

To add spacing, click the page break block one time. Click the arrows to add spacing above or below the block.

Duplicating a template.
Clone the proposal template.
Go to the top right corner of the page.
Save the template.
Click the three-dot icon.
Select Duplicate.
In the conformation popup, click Duplicate.
BrokerEngine closes the original template and displays the duplicate.
